Summer of Books.

Here's the first batch of books for this summer. The top three were my demo books from Saturday.

So, while in preparation mode for last Saturday's workshop at Surface, I decided that my goal for the next few months, (one of em') is to make a book for each day of my summer. I don't intend on making one every single day, because there will be some travel (and laziness!) in the mix...but when I am in work-mode, I can finish several in a day.

And I'm not promising they'll all be pretty, 'cause I intend on teaching myself some bindings I do not know. This project will be good, satisfying practice/progress, and will help me build up an inventory of blank books in case I participate at any events like Unique LA in the Winter.

And...now that I've announced this plan to all you strangers out there who read my blog, I better get to work, huh?

Also, (speaking of books) I'm not sure I've mentioned that I am returning to Penland this summer to make books for a couple of weeks. Thank God, right?

Beautiful bindings. What a fun challenge to do a book a day or so! Hmmmm, another wonderful challenge to consider!

I wrote you the other day after seeing your art mentioned on Kelly Kilmer's blog. I love your drawings and wondered if you gave your students any additional instructions for the 100 days of drawings challenge. I love this idea and pulled out small pieces of paper this morning to encourage myself to do the same or something close to it.

Thanks for your inspiration(s)!

Hi Deb! Thanks for the comments!

I left the daily drawing challenge VERY open to the students. I supplied almost all the paper, we were all working the same size, and all my students (all levels/sections) were doing it, so it was sort of the common denominator for the semester. I wanted to have some aspect of the class that would provide a sense of continuity....(what with furlough days and irregular lab hours fragmenting the semester.)

I think most of my students loved doing it.

I have been meaning to write up a blog post about the daily drawing challenge...just haven't gotten around to it!

Thanks again!

I feel like it really is a summer of books. I wonder how many other people we know that are making books all summer... it would be fun to do a random trade with summer of bookers.
